Teoh Beng Hock inquest: Redemption for Ean Yong

No links to implicate Seri Kembangan assemblyman for misconduct, says MACC

Malay Mail Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Commission of Inquiry was informed this morning the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) found no statements implicating Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah for misconduct under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009. The Act relates to offences of intending to deceive a principal by an agent.
MACC officer from Putrajaya, Ahmad Shafik Abdul Rahman @ Alwee, 32, who received the investigation papers on Aug 27, 2009, said: "We found nothing which could link Ean Yong to the offence under the section."
Ahmad Shafik, who was in charge of gathering documents and collecting statements for MACC's "Ops Dun", said the probe showed all projects which were conducted by Ean Yong were actually completed by appointed contractors."
He said four documents pertaining the projects were based on printouts obtained from Teoh's laptop.
Ahmad Shafik, who was being questioned by conducting officer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, said based on the statement given by MACC witness, Lee Wye Wing, matters pertaining to such projects would be informed to Teoh via email, or met directly. An earlier witness, MACC officer K. Sachianandan, 29, told the commission it was normal for MACC officers to sleep in the office.
RCI chairman Tan Sri James Foong had asked Sachianandan whether i t was normal for MACC officers to do so, to which Sachianandan said "yes".
"Every job is stressful, but not mine. I enjoy my job," Sachianandan said, adding he has a diploma in  accountancy and had undergone six months training with the police before he was recruited by MACC.
Foong asked whether there was any training or courses given for officers to control their ego as MACC officers had the power to call anyone to record statements and to challenge them.
"I do not feel I have the power," said Sachianandan.
"It might not be the truth. You are young, your qualifications allowed you to interrogate anyone, including high officials," Foong said.
"Were there any courses or programmes to control your ego, to control yourself just in case things fly too high in your head?"
"I can't remember," Sachianandan said.
The RCI was formed after an open verdict was returned by the Coroner's Court on Jan 5 following an inquest into Teoh's death.
Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas had, in delivering the open verdict, also dismissed suicide and homicide as causes of death.
